An independent leader who always puts taxpayers first, Joan McCarthy Lasonde is running for the State Senate to help us, her neighbors. Joan will fight to stop the corrupt politicians from ruining our state even more. As our next State Senator, Joan will fight to freeze property taxes, roll back the Laura Fine/Mike Madigan record 32% tax increase and fight to protect the most vulnerable.
Joan is one of us. She was born in Rogers Park, grew up in Skokie where both of her parents served as Chicago public school teachers and she has lived most of her life here in the 9th State Senate District. A graduate of the University of Illinois, Joan moved to Los Angeles to serve as the Marketing Director for a national corporation. Accepting a career advancement position, Joan was thrilled to return to Chicago to work for Michigan Avenue advertising agencies on major commercial accounts.
It was then Joan met her husband, Greg. As Greg’s career in manufacturing progressed and his company offered him the opportunity for growth and relocation to Michigan and later, China, the Lasondes were faced with some tough choices like so many other families have had to make. They moved away from the neighborhood they love, but knew they would come back. While in China Joan served as the Editor of the Quingdao Expat Magazine, doubling its circulation and size in the short time she was there. She also wrote a successful blog for the magazine called “3 China Girls” which chronicled the lives of her and her daughters. Wrongly, the Chinese government often shut down her blog for exposing the truth of what life was really like in China for the poorest and most vulnerable. But being the fighter she is, Joan kept reopening the magazine, because she was proud to speak up for those who couldn’t speak up for themselves.
Today, Joan continues to be a leader fighting for and speaking up for those in our neighborhoods who need our help. Joan serves on the Board of Directors of the Illinois State Crime Commission and is focused on winning the battle to end the opioid epidemic and end human trafficking. Additionally, Joan and her husband are licensed DCFS foster parents, and have been fostering a child for approximately 5 years. They’ve seen firsthand the horrors foster children often face and more specifically how state government has failed our most vulnerable. Joan is working to correct those failures so our government helps, not hurts, those born into hardship.
Joan’s been very active in her local community, including serving on the Board at Evanston School Children’s Clothing Association and the League of Women Voters. Joan and her husband Greg adore their family which includes three daughters, one of whom is their foster child, and their dog.
